A Look at this pattern with an adjective and a to-innitive.

  • Which was the n-t country to win the Rugby World Cup?
(= the first country that won the Rugby World Cup)
  • The last boy to leave will have to turn out the lights.
(= the last boy who leaves)
  • You're the only student to sign up for the course.
(= the only student who has signed up for the course)
  • Ronald Reagan was the oldest man to become US President.
(= the oldest man who became US President)

We can use a to-infinitive after an ordinal number (first, second, etc); after next and last: after only: and after a superlative adjective (e.g. oldest).
We can use a passive to-infinitive.
  • The first British monarch to be filmed was Queen Victoria.

Infinitive Relative Clauses

We can use a to-infinitive in this pattern with a preposition + which.

  • These are is ideal locations from which to explore the Lake District.
  • I need a piano of my own on which to practice.
This pattern is rather formal. In informal English we can leave out which and put the preposition at the end.
  • I need a piano of my own to practice on
